OVERVIEW: The SET-40M is a lightweight, acoustic-homing, anti-submarine torpedo designed for deployment from small surface vessels. It is an improved version of the Soviet SET-40 series intended for short-range ASW engagements in littoral waters.

DETAILS: The designation "SET" stands for "Samonavodyashchayasya Elektrotorpeda" meaning "self-guided electric torpedo" in Russian. The SET-40M was introduced as a modernized follow-up to the SET-40, featuring improved seeker electronics, propulsion reliability, and target discrimination in shallow and cluttered environments. It uses active/passive acoustic homing and is powered by an electric propulsion system with a silver-zinc battery. The system is optimized for use by smaller patrol boats and corvettes where heavier torpedoes are impractical.

The SET-40M, also known as MGT-2, improved performance over the original SET-40 by increasing depth range, enhancing guidance algorithms, and incorporating better countermeasure resistance. The torpedo also introduced minor hydrodynamic refinements for better stability in coastal conditions.
